Just the Right Word

My latest work in progress is a suspense novel entitled, Writing Murder. It’s a suspense novel, but it’s also a story about generational trauma. It explores the things that go unsaid in families, and the resulting pain that silence causes. I feel a huge responsibility to write this well – to do it justice in a way that will help those who read it and to encourage families not to continue in paths that lead to unnecessary despair.

The weight that lays on the shoulders of those who write about hard things isn’t often discussed, but it’s a real thing. Writers agonize about finding just the right word, the most impactful phrasing, the best way to communicate a difficult topic with nuance and care.

The next time you read a book about a painful subject, know that the writer behind those words struggled profoundly to write a story that would affect you deeply – but they did it with great concern and compassion for you, the reader they cherish.
